Paper, Oak gall Ink, Onion skin ink, Liquid Gold metal Ink. Antique glass Bell jar.

h: 24 w: 16 d: 16 (cms).

COCOON was made in the height of the Summer.

It is an imaginary piece.

A piece where I reflect on the nature of 'cocooning' myself during Lockdown.

It hangs simply suspended, waiting, protected by the glass Bell jar.

In this piece I have worked with dyed mulberry paper, working layer by layer building up the cocoon, then resoaking with oak gall ink, drying it and stretching it to the limits of the paper until I felt content with its representation of strength, fragility and resilience.

I then adorned the edges with Gold ink, representing the warmth and glow of sunlight.

I have been studying insect nests and cocoons all Summer, finding the architechture of these natural homes both facinating and beautiful.

Paper, Oak gall Ink, Onion skin ink, Liquid Gold metal Ink. Antique glass Bell jar.

h: 15 w: 12 d: 12 (cms).

'Tiny home' is the first piece I made in Lockdown.

I lost my Mother in Lockdown, and making these tiny nests gave me a sense of solace in the turmoil at the time.

Nature gave me great strength in its ability to carry on with life and the delicacy yet strength of this paper nest was a way of representing all that felt safe about being home at the time.

'Tiny home' is constructed with onion skin Ink, mulberry paper and a tiny supporting branch.

It is held protected in an antique glass dome to preserve its memory.

Topsy Turvy

Paper, Oak gall ink, white Gouache, Gold liquid metal Ink , wood.

h: 12 w: 20 d: 12 (cms).

'Topsy Turvy' was made initially as a statement piece.

After studying the delicate beauty of paper wasp nests over the Summer I became more and more dismayed with the unnecessary destruction of these 'homes' and colonies.

Wasps are highly social creatures who offer us so much in their pollination of our crops to the intricate paper making skills they possess.

This piece began its life mimicking the paper building of the wasps using mulberry paper, layer upon layer I created it as a whole 'nest'. Then deliberately I broke the piece apart exposing the fragile egg cells inside and placing it on a branch as if it had been dropped to the ground with no care.

This piece of work in one way also represents the topsy turvy nature of society in Lockdown and the behavior of some in society to the natural world as Lockdown was gradually lifted.
