Statement
I am a paper and ceramic artist based in Devon and create marine artwork with a passion for the ocean, inspired by coastal living.
Influenced by volunteering at the UK’s first National Marine Park, Plymouth Sound, my work explores themes of marine conservation and in my 'Good Blue News Art Project' I share stories of 'good ocean news' emerging from their brilliant work.
I create shoals of hundreds of paper fish with surface design in acrylics and foiled papers to catch the light. Each one is made individually by hand and using my own graphic, technical designs the fish are mounted in relief for a sense of movement. Set on bright white painted board with glazed monochrome frames, my intention is to allow my work to speak for itself.
I use paper clay for framed ceramic shoals and am researching and developing a new low fire paper clay and low fire glazes, as I look to reduce firing schedules and temperatures.
Biography
I was a lawyer practising in London and Devon for many years but, compelled by my life-long love of art and craft, several years ago I left my legal career behind; finally making the leap to follow my heart by establishing my paper and ceramic art practice.
Endlessly curious and highly motivated to push creative boundaries, my work is driven by my love of problem-solving. Innovative graphic and surface design follows research and development of new materials and processes and I craft my signature shoals of fish and mount them at scale for impact.
As I look constantly for ways to improve the sustainability of my art practice, initial results of my research and development of a new, low fire paper clay and glazes are published in two articles in the regional ceramics publication (‘Paper Clay: An Exploration (Part 1)’, Westcountry Potters Magazine, Issue 191, Nov/Dec 2024 and 'Paper Clay: An Exploration (Part 2)'; Westcountry Potters Magazine, Issue 192, Jan/Feb 2025).
I am co-founder of Totnes Potters, a former committee member of Westcountry Potters Association and a member of several creative groups including Crafts Council Directory. My work is shown in exhibitions and at several galleries in Devon.
